Diesel engines convert heat (from the fuel) to mechanical energy through the expanding gases of burning diesel fuel, in turn moving the pistons and crankshaft and converting the energy to roation motion that can be harnessed for work. The diesel engine is incredible because it is thermally more efficient than gasoline engines, typically more durable and long lasting.
